21st    CENTURY    COMMUNITY    LEARNING    CENTERS

August 12, 2010

Parents:

2010 -2011 is proving to be an interesting year for the 21st Century program in the Rolette Public Schools.  There has been a recent change in leadership in Bismarck, so I don’t know the exact amount of Rolette’s grant but I have  been told to expect at least the same amount as we had last year ($46,000). So, that is good news.

Three of our programs will be starting Monday, August 23, 2010.  The Elementary Homework Room will be open at 7:30 am in the Library (which is a change of location from last year).  Parents, please walk your children to the library. The High School Homework Room will be open at 7:45 am and will stay open until 8:30 am. (This start time is a little later this year.) Open Gym will also be begin at 7:45 am on Monday, August 23.

All other programs will begin the week of September 7.  I am including a daily schedule so you can see what is offered.

Again, there will be NO busing this year.  Many of our activities take place before school, so minimal parental driving will be required to pick up students.

Art and Reader’s Theater will take place on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. I am trying to schedule events so that any elementary student should be able to go to a Thursday afternoon activity almost every Thursday of the year.

The 21st Century Extended Year Learning Program will also fund speakers/field trips which will explore community resources that lead to career choices and also that teach lifelong skills. If you have any ideas, please let me know…remember that the activities cannot take place during the regular school day.

This Extended Year Learning Program has four goals.

1. To provide a safe, nurturing environment for children outside of the regular school day.

2. To provide an exciting learning environment for academic improvement for all children of the community.

3.  To establish partnerships among families, students, and the community.

4. To develop effective practices for the all NESC sites to assure continue improvement of programs.

I’ve included a copy of our weekly schedule so that you can see the activities that Rolette offers. Please fill out a registration form for each of your children who plan on attending any of these programs and return it to me at the school. Students can bring them to their teachers or to Mrs. Lucas in the office or to me in my classroom.

I am excited about this year’s 21st Century Extended Year Learning Program.  If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns please contact me. Marilyn.Walsh@sendit.nodak.edu or give me a call at school (246-3595).  The best time for me to take phone calls is between 8:00 and 8:30 am or between 3:15 and 4:00 pm.

Also, if you have elementary students please remember to sign your child/children up for Art after School and Reader’s Theater on the registration form so that I can get a schedule made and back to you so that you know when your child will be having art/reader’s theater.
